Increased economic globalisation has contributed to a remarkable increase in living standards across the world and while its adjustment costs and financial risks need careful management they do not justify a backlash against globalisation, according to the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

The 23rd World Day to Combat Desertification was celebrated in Burkina Faso's capital of Ouagadougou on June 15 with a call to create two million jobs and restore 10 million hectares of degraded land.
