"The American Dream is rapidly becoming the American Illusion as the US now has the lowest rate of social mobility of a ny of the rich countries," said Professor Philip Alston, the UN Special Rapporteu r on extreme poverty and human rights, at the end of a two-week fact-finding mis sion to California, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, and Washington DC, as well as Puerto Rico.

While the media may be attracted by image s of migrants drowning or sold as slaves, another flagrant but lesser-known d rama is that of care workers, who are overwhelmingly women, often migrants, and who make a very large contribution to global public health, but are exposed to great health risks themselves with little or no protection, let alone basic labou r rights.

Ferdous Begum was cleaning her child after he had defecated in the open, using leaves she collected from a nearby tree at Bangladesh's Teknaf Nature Park. The settlement is packed with Rohi ngya refugees who fled military persecution in Myanmar since August.
