COVID-19 : South needs global debt deal to head off economic disaster (PRIV)

A global debt deal for the developing world is needed to head off a looming debt disaster in developing countries, suffering from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said on Thursday (23 April).

Saudi Arabia has attempted, through its Riyadh Initiative for the consideration of the year-end G20 summit meeting, to bring about a "one-size-fits-all approach" for the "WTO system," in order to "reflect a shared concept of all members, including by members of all levels of economic development."

Q&A : Social distancing & hundreds of millions in poverty - a new normal? (PRIV)

With much of the global economy stalled amid an unprecedented lockdown of nations grappling to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the author of a new United Nations report on the disease's impact on poverty told IPS that hundreds of millions more could be pushed into poverty and we can expect to see social unrest.
