SOUTH-SOUTH TRADE COULD STIMULATE INDUSTRIALISATION - UNIDO.

VIENNA, 10 MAY 1985 (OPECNA) – Increased south-south trade could give impetus to Third world industrialisation and stimulate "significant economic growth" in the north, says a UNIDO report published Wednesday.-

The report, titled "Industry and Development: Global Report 1985", highlights development strategies and policies and provides a global perspective for industrial cooperation, according to the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.-

The report aims at presenting a current assessment of the progress of developing countries’ industrialisation efforts and analysing policies which could improve prospects for industrial development in the south.-

To boost Third World economic growth "to at least seven percent annually", the report proposes a three-point programme – coordinated policies to sustain economic growth rates of at lest 3.5 percent annually in the north, liberalising international trade with a view to eliminating barriers to the north’s importation of manufactured goods from the south and active north-south cooperation for restructuring world industry through a "rational division of labour".-
