GATT OFFICERS FOR 1986 NAMED.

GENEVA, NOVEMBER 29 (IFDA) — The GATT Contracting Parties elected Thursday Amb. K. Chiba of Japan as the chairman of the Contracting Parties, and Amb. Kun Park of South Korea as the chairman of the GATT Council, for 1986.-

Egypt’s Mahmoud Abdel-Bari Hamsa, Luxembourg’s Jean-Louis Wlozfeld, and Nicaragua’s Gustavo Adolfo Vargas, were elected vice-chairmen.-

Though largely honorific offices, in 1986 in the context of the efforts to launch a new round and the work in that connection at the sessions of the Contracting Parties, the vice-chairmen are expected to have some role.-

According to Third World sources, the us had been unhappy with the choice of vice-chairmen (which by rotation went to the Africa and Latin America) and had tried unsuccessfully to get vice-chairmen from Africa and Latin America who would be more amenable to the U.S. views.-

The GATT Trade and Development Committee which deals with the problems of the Third World countries is to be chaired by Argentina’s Osvaldo Lopez Noguerol.-
